Now, with a mouse, you’d assume this is nice and easy, just click and away you go, but with a controller you have to kind of aim a beam of light to the node you want, and hope it selects the right one. The biggest of these is an annoying imprecision when trying to select a particular node to build on. There are niggles, especially with a port of a fairly complex game from mouse and keyboard to controller, as you’d expect. While I had to move a bit closer to the screen to read what I was meant to be doing, it all works fairly well. There are missions and contracts on the left, a bit of info about the selected mission in the middle, and then the interface with the station A.I. The final screen is where we can accept jobs, and is a very text dense, quite small text kind of screen. There are up to three connectors on a module, and they need to be linked into the existing circuits in order to provide (I assume) air, power and all the things that are required to live and work in space. Once a module has been constructed and attached, it then needs to have the plumbing attached, which is where the third of the aforementioned screens come in. Helpfully, each module has a symbol assigned to it, and the missions that you can undertake also have symbols against them, so if you are lacking a necessary module it is easy to see what you need to build. As you start off a mission, there are a number of free nodes available that you can plainly see, allowing you to attach modules to them, such as extra habitation, giving you more workforce, or an administration centre to allow you to perform extra tasks. The external view of the space station is the screen that we need to use in order to build new modules and attach them to the station. ![]() So, orbit.industries isn’t going to blow your socks off with its presentation (indeed, they remained firmly on throughout the entirety of the review process), but how about actual gameplay? What is it like to be a bold Space Pioneer, building a space station using only your wits and available money? Well, slow, is the word that springs to mind, along with ‘strangely calming’ and ‘almost zen-like’. Or if you run your station as efficiently as I did, telling you that funds are critically low. Sound wise it is all very minimal as well, with a robotic voice over teaching you the basics and introducing each step of the missions you have to complete. Looking at the endless reaches of space is quite nice, and being able to zoom and pan the view around your station is decent enough in a relaxing kind of way. And this is the sum total of the visuals, and while it wouldn’t make my work laptop sweat (and that’s not a great machine, folks) it is sufficient for what orbit.industries is trying to do. ![]() NickToons (March 7, 2011-February 14, 2016)ĭue to the popularity of the show, Nickelodeon and Paramount have released episodes of the show for availability on home video and music from the show on albums.Nickelodeon (original run, January 11, 2004-Septemreruns, September 17, 2007-December 18, 2014).Drake then tries to get him out but ends up getting caught, too as the two stepbrothers are saved by Helen when the Judge makes a deal with the two to give Mary Alice and her foster family "the best Christmas ever" and if they fail they go back to prison. ![]() ![]() Messages go off the screen very quickly and a lot of screen space is spent on decorations (user icons, names, speech bubbles, padding) leaving it with basically the density of comic chat. This is especially a problem with communication tools, which for some reason are all copying Slack and leaving very little screen space for the thing you actually want to see - the text that the other person is writing. I'm not the person you're replying to but I can put in my two cents on what I miss often in modern designs: The mantra often repeated at the design program where I worked was: "The user is not like me." The real problem occurs when a designer attempts to substitute their own gut instinct to compensate for a lack of understanding of their target audience. With respect to things like whitespace, information density, hit-target/button size, modals, adherence to platform standards, up-front complexity vs hidden actions, icons vs words, customizability, etc those can be good or bad depending on user and context. The difference was that the former had the humility to accept that the design missed the mark and continued to iterate whereas the latter was often willing to ship anyway due to misplaced confidence, strict deadlines, or a CEO with a Steve Jobs complex. Even the best design groups I've worked with produced nearly the same number of beautiful-but-bad designs as the worst ones. (Along with an organization that has the humility to accept when a redesign is unsuccessful.) If you do nothing else, do this. Second, usability tests with a representative sample of the target audience. When interviewing designers I'm regularly surprised how many of them have been working in the field for years and have a beautiful portfolio and yet when I drill into their process they seem to have spent surprisingly little effort understanding of the human on one side of the interaction. I agree with most of what people have written, but I think the two biggest gaps are:įirst, understanding the target users and their goals, tasks, skills, context of use, performance, etc. In my experience, "dribbble designers" sometimes take a "cargo cult" approach to design that apes the appearance of good design without understanding what actually makes a design good in the first place. Even Google AdWords has had malware injected in its JavaScript, a blogger is not going to be worth my time to read if I have to trust his code isn't malicious just to see what he has to say about an obscure fruit. I shouldn't need JavaScript to see that, especially if I don't know you or trust you. Many times this is even just so they can show you a blog post, which is just text and some images. Just for prettiness they'll break a basic browser functionality, then they try to re-implement in their framework and it just creates an abstraction layer on top of an abstraction layer, creating unnecessary bloat. Most of these things are reinventing the wheel. I shouldn't be logged out or yelled at by an app for hitting the back or refresh buttons on my web browser. For instance, I shouldn't have to sacrifice the ability to open a link in a new tab, or sacrifice the ability to link _period_ which is commonly the case (which interferes with bookmarking, etc). Just basic adherence to web standards I think is really the problem people have with these interfaces.īasic support for already existing web client functionality. ![]() More on it can be learned on (Disclaimer: I was the mentor of this GSoC project). Like the cassock, the zucchetto is a marker of the clergy, helping the church leadership to stand out and take on a uniform and organized appearance. So if you want a papal keepsake, bring a zucchetto with you the next time the pope is speaking! Pope Benedict XVI and, more recently, Pope Francis, have done this often. One interesting note about the zucchetto is that, if a visitor offers the pope his or her own zucchetto, the pontiff will often remove his and replace it with the gift, giving his old one to the visitor. The other home uniform was a new version of the Birds on the Bat. The home kit had red piping and a new STL emblem that was similar to the 1903 STL cap emblem. Meanwhile, priests and deacons wear black. The Cardinals won the pennant and donned a set of 3 brand new uniforms for the World Series, two home kits and one road kit. Next is scarlet, worn by cardinals, and then bishops, who wear amaranth. The highest color, white, is worn by the pope. ![]() It is usually made from silk, and features eight triangular panels joined to form a circle. ![]() Amongst the clergy, the color of the zucchetto denotes the wearer’s rank, and lower ranking members must always remove their zucchetto in the presence of a higher ranking member of the clergy. This piece of the pope’s clothing is a small, round skullcap. It creates a sense of unity, and the white color the pope’s cassock marks him out as the singular leader. The meaning of the cassock is quite simple-it represents the clergy, just as any uniform represents the organization of its wearer. ![]() The ecclesiastical version of the cassock arrived later, around the 17 th century. The word “cassock,” is Middle French for “long coat,” and evolved from attire worn by soldiers and horsemen, which later become a long garment worn in everyday life in ancient Rome. The pope’s cassock is white, whereas those lower in the Catholic hierarchy are most often seen in black versions of the garment. He wears the cassock when not celebrating religious services-it’s his everyday uniform, so to speak, called the house dress. The cassock is what you’ll almost always find the pope wearing, and is an instantly recognizable ankle-length garmentĪlthough the cassock has largely fallen out of style within the Catholic Church, it is still a major part of the pope’s wardrobe. |
